As Pleasure Builds For J’Ouvert, So Do Hopes For Peace

The celebration became a formal event in 1993 when the organizers established a nonprofit, J’ouvert City International.
“I love the food, I love the costumes, I love the music, and just the energy,” she said.
J’ouvert “tells a story,” said Dave Holder, 54, who compared the event to the Halloween parade.
She is flying in from Los Angeles for J’ouvert after missing it last year for the first time in over 14 years.
The event saw deadly violence again last year, despite the addition of hundreds of officers and fliers asking revelers not to shoot anyone.
