That brings the total to 3.5 million potential fake accounts — two thirds more than the 2.1 million that the bank previously acknowledged.
Former branch workers at Wells Fargo have told NPR they faced unrelenting pressure from managers to open as many customer accounts as possible.
Wells Fargo has said it is disturbed to hear such reports and is also looking into the matter.
This most recent revelation will likely ratchet up the congressional and regulatory scrutiny that Wells Fargo already faces.
