Florida coaching rumors: Chip Kelly reportedly an applicant

Aside from the apparent current college individuals for the Florida work – UCF head mentor Scott Frost and Oregon head mentor Willie Taggart have been in the business lead, per SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey, even though Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen is another apparent consideration – a vintage name is raising some eyebrows: former Oregon Ducks head coach and current ESPN commentator Chip Kelly.

Yahoo Sports activities’ Pete Thamel reviews Florida is definitely interested in Kelly.

A thorough vetting of Kelly has begun. That includes telephone calls to NFL executives to accomplish general backdrop on Kelly and exploration of his NCAA issues at Oregon. Kelly wasn’t regarded as intrigued by SEC jobs, but Florida presents a several dynamic as it has even more of Kelly’s favored East Coastline vibe. For now, it’s as yet not known if each get together is totally sold on each other. However the mutual exploration process is underway.

Another rumor, from one of the first to report Jim McElwain’s period at Florida was about over:

Confirmed that UF is certainly looking at Chip Kelly as up coming head mentor. Decision could be when this week. Also listened to that Florida was growing to be very disappointed with Jimmy Sexton, who symbolizes many other potential candidates. Chip is certainly represented by David Dunn. – Darren Heitner (@DarrenHeitner) November 13, 2017

While Kelly hasn’t coached at the collegiate level since 2012, he’s been rumored to be a candidate for virtually every major college or university opening since.

And just about every time a prominent school is losing, you could find fans of this group calling for Kelly to take over.

As for Florida specifically, Alligator Army highlights as to why having him on the list makes sense:

Kelly is the No. 1 applicant of frustrated Florida supporters, 2010-present and also Alligator Army’s all-period Florida wide receivers mentor. His Oregon offenses revolutionized college or university football in a way very similar to Spurrier’s offenses revolutionizing the SEC, and his Ducks were cool and arrogant in ways that harkened back to Spurrier’s halcyon days, too. There are several Florida fans who see Chip Kelly as a squatter Steve Spurrier with fewer visor tosses.

Kelly jumping to the NFL and failing at both Philadelphia and San Fransisco reminds me of Steve Spurrier’s jump from the Gators to the Washington Redskins in 2002. He previously the offensive ingenuity to become successful NFL head mentor, nonetheless it never panned out.

He ended up returning to the collegiate ranks with South Carolina, where he led the Gamecocks to historic heights from 2005 to 2015. I’m not really a fortune teller expressing Kelly’s story would proceed the same way if he does return to college, but I could see it happening.

Pete Carroll and Nick Saban earned national titles following leaving the NFL head coaching ranks as well.

There is cause for hesitation, though.

In 2013, Kelly was hit with a two-season show-cause ban because of his connection with the 2011 Oregon recruiting scandal. Alligator Army items that out as the reason why his name wasn’t mentioned substantially for the job in 2014:

Kelly’s show-trigger penalty was a solid reason he was not a strong applicant for Florida in 2014; now, it’s easier to point to a lot of reasons other than Florida’s strong choice for certainly not thumbing its nose at the NCAA that Florida wouldn’t normally want to fork out the prime to pry Kelly off of TV and obtain him to Gainesville, and even easier to believe that Kelly simply doesn’t want to coach college or university football again. (And, well: Rules might get in the manner anyway.)

He’s also under no circumstances coached found in the Southeast, and there’s an argument that many of his methods have been adopted by applications all across the country anyway.

Plenty of Florida supporters wouldn’t brain having Kelly, though. A sample of the AD’s mentions during McElwain’s exit:

I want Chip Kelly at Florida. Make it work @ScottStricklin – Scoochie (@HAleYeAhh) October 29, 2017

Get me personally Chip Kelly @ScottStricklin – JD (@JustinDowell2) October 29, 2017

@ScottStricklin love the maneuver today. No need to waste anymore period with this nonsense. Make sure you contact Chip Kelly ASAP! – Jason Krehbiel (@jaxsurfer84) October 29, 2017

If Kelly and Florida aren’t a match, expect his name to stay in the coaching carousel throughout December anyway.
