(CNN) Fire drills became famous decades ago after some deadly fires triggered alterations safely codes. Today, teachers and children are preparing for something completely different: mass shootings.

A good gunman tried to break right into a remote Northern California elementary college on Tuesday but officials say, the easy action of college officials “saved countless lives and children.”

The building went on lockdown, a teacher rushed to block a classroom’s door with a computer and students ducked under their desks. Those responses have become the brand new normal as even more schools are having to adapt even more elaborate safety measures.

Two thirds of institutions in america conduct active-shooter exercises and practically every one of them have a plan if a shooter comes into the school, the Government Accountability Office within a recent survey of schools.

“I think everybody, irrespective of where you are, must think about this. If you’re in a college, in a college, if you visit the movies we have to all be thinking about what are we likely to do if a crisis breaks out the following,” stated Christopher Combs, FBI unique agent in control, after previous week’s church massacre in Texas.
