Analysts: Cyber Mon isn’t as important any longer thanks to e-commerce

E-commerce growth is definitely stymieing the importance of over the internet shopping extravaganza Cyber Monday, several market experts told CNBC’s “Closing Bell” on Black Friday.

“I don’t believe Cyber Monday is as important as it was previously because we’re constantly connected. We can shop from everywhere,” said Liz Dunn, founder and CEO of retail analytics program company Pro4ma. “I won’t need to hang on until that instant where I’m before my computer on Monday.”

Adobe Analytics calculated that mobile appointments accounted for roughly 61 percent of Dark Friday’s traffic, with merchants seeing double-digit growth found in online transactions via desktops, smartphones and tablets.

Yet even though some Cyber Monday gives deeper discounts than Black Friday’s, the makeshift vacation is still losing its luster, said Brian Nagel, senior retail and e-commerce analyst in Oppenheimer.

“Cyber Monday was popular because that’s when people went back with their offices and had a computer that could shop online,” Nagel said about Cyber Monday’s nascent phases.

Nagel said Cyber Monday initially became popular before the age group of internet-connected gadgets, when people would come back to function after Thanksgiving weekend and see the web for bargains. “Now we are able to shop online anytime, therefore i think that’s seriously diminished in significance aswell,” he said.

Simeon Siegel, Instinet’s executive director of shops, specialty retail and clothes equity analysis, added that the newer pattern of retailers offering Dark Friday-level discounts earlier found in November and through December cell phone calls the importance of one-day shopping holidays into question.

With online shopping holidays like Amazon’s Primary Day arriving at the fore, the fourth quarter all together is growing less very important to merchants year over year, Siegel said.

“The entirety of this period is really diminishing as a percent of the total calendar year,” the analyst said. “Therefore whether that’s because we’ve Prime Time over the summertime, it’s extended beyond just the holiday period and I believe that’s important to keep in mind.”
