‘Silence Breakers’ called Time’s Person of the entire year

Those who have come forwards to share their bank account of sexual harassment and assault, dubbed the “Silence Breakers,” have been named Time’s 2017 Person of the entire year, Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal announced Wednesday morning.

“The 2017 Person of the entire year may be the ‘Silence Breakers,’ the voices that launched a motion,” Felsenthal said on NBC’s “The Today Exhibit.” “This is actually the fastest moving social switch we’ve seen in decades and it commenced by individual works of courage by hundreds of women, plus some men also, who came onward to tell their private reports of sexual harassment and assault.”

Over the past almost a year, survivors of sexual harassment and assault have shared their accounts, with some using the hashtag #MeToo.

The hashtag became popularized this season by actress Alyssa Milano, however the movement was created over 10 years ago by activist Tarana Burke. Both had been interviewed by Period for the individual of the entire year issue.

Burke on Tuesday likewise appeared at POLITICO’s Girls Rule celebration, where she decried the systemic nature of the abuse.

““The reality is people don’t want to talk about this matter,” she said. “I believe it needed the light of pop traditions shine onto it before people would pay attention. In ways, I’m grateful for that.”

“We look at the level to which this is absolutely just the beginning, and how far will it go, how deep in to the county, how longlasting,” Felsenthal said. “The photo you check out partially on the covers is a female we talked to, a hospital worker in the center of the country who shared her storyline with us plus some other but doesn’t feel like she could come onward without threatening her livelihood.”

President Donald Trump was first named runner up this season, and was first 2016’s Person of the entire year. In November he tweeted that Time Magazine explained he “was PROBABLY going to be named ‘Gentleman (Person) of the entire year.’ like this past year but I would have to agree to a great interview and a major image shoot. I said perhaps no very good and took a pass.”

Time responded to Trump’s tweet found in November, later telling it was “incorrect.”
