President Donald Trump signaled Wednesday that Congress could neglect to meet its Fri deadline to fund the federal government, preemptively blaming Democrats who want protections for so-called Dreamers.
“It might happen,” the president said of a possible shutdown. “The Democrats are actually looking at something that is very dangerous for our nation. They are considering shutting down.”

Republicans control both properties of Congress. But Trump blamed Democrats, declaring they need “illegal immigrants – oftentimes people that people don’t want inside our nation” – to pour in to the U.S., getting with them “tremendous levels of crime.”
“We don’t want to have that. You want to have an excellent, beautiful, crime-free nation,” Trump told reporters ahead of a Cabinet conference at the White House. “And we wish people coming into our country, but we wish them to seriously our basis. And that’s why we’re being so careful with this process and our screening.”
The House and Senate have to strike a bipartisan offer by Fri to avert a government shutdown, as Republicans would need eight Democratic senators to pass a spending bill.

Trump will meet with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi on Thursday. Democrats would like a compromise to increase protections for hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, known as Dreamers, who are secured by an Obama-era method that Trump will result in March.
“The Democrats maybe would want to shut down the united states because they want persons flowing into our country,” Trump said. “And I’d like people coming into our country, but I want to vet those people, and I wish to vet them very carefully because we don’t wanna have radical Islamic terrorism in this nation. And we don’t wanna possess crime in this nation.”
