Why most NFL jerseys are receiving a new look

Look out to get a new feature upon NFL jerseys.

Players who have received the Walter Payton NFL Guy of the entire year award can sport a particular patch on the uniforms.

Drew Brees, who gained the award in 2006, can be the first person to sport the patch when the brand new Orleans Saints play the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. It’s a silhouette of a football person wearing a sideline layer, meant to look like a cape. The patch was modeled following the trophy for the award.

Man of the entire year is directed at players who demonstrate a good dedication to their communities off the discipline while excelling in the sport.

“It’s as being a captain’s patch,” Brees told CNNMoney. “Guys who have a captain’s patch put on that with satisfaction, and I think they’ll put on the Walter Payton Man of the entire year patch with pride aswell.”

Brees won the award for his work with his basis, which raises money to help find a cure for tumor and help cancer sufferers.

The award is typically directed at one player a year, nominated by his teammates. Each of the 32 teams picks a new player, and three finalists happen to be picked in January. The winner is announced the night prior to the Super Bowl.

Last year, Arizona Cardinals huge receiver Larry Fitzgerald and New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning both won the honor.

Fitzgerald credited his mother with encouraging him to be active in his community and give rear. He informed CNNMoney that he’s honored by the award and that his mother, who passed away in 2003, would be proud of him.

While he’s a “bit shy” about wearing a patch to commemorate his volunteer function, he said the winners discussed it closely with the NFL. The league wanted to make sure players were secure showing their award on the jerseys.

“The consensus was that the guys were Alright with it,” he said. “It’s about looking to get guys on a single page to keep to inspire and motivate others to obtain active and have a presence within their communities.”

He wouldn’t say who he thought deserved to come to be this year’s winner, but he complimented Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt for the task he did to raise more than $37 million for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Past winners who remain playing will wear the patch on the jerseys. Various other winners who remain active include Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis and Dallas Cowboys restricted end Jason Witten.

All winners will get to wear the uniform patch for the others of their professions. This season’s nominees will be announced Thursday. They will get to put on a Man of the entire year decal on the helmets for all of those other season.

The award has been around since 1970 but was renamed for Hall of Famer Walter Payton in 1999 after his loss of life. Payton was regarded for his amazing skill as a new player and his humanitarian work with at-risk youth.
